Getting Started

Call of Nature is an interactive art installation: visitors use MIDI controllers to trigger light feedback (LED strip and WiZ bulbs) and video playback.

What you will need

  • Raspberry Pi 5 (2 GB RAM minimum) with USB-C power supply
  • microSD card (32 GB+)
  • USB hub + Pocket Scion MIDI controllers
  • Adafruit NeoPixels to create a LED strip with Dupont wires (see wiring guide)
  • WiZ connected light bulbs
  • HDMI display (for video output)
  • Smartphone with the WiZ app (iOS / Android) for bulb pairing
  • A computer with Balena Etcher for flashing the SD card

Setup steps

  1. Wire the LED strip to the Raspberry Pi GPIO pins before powering on the Pi. See LED wiring guide.

  2. Setup the Raspberry Pi: flash the SD card and boot. See Raspberry Pi setup. You will then be connected to the CallOfNature hotspot (password: NatureIsCalling) and can reach the control panel at http://callofnature.local:8000/.

  3. Connect the MIDI controllers via the USB hub. See MIDI setup.

  4. Pair the WiZ bulbs using the smartphone app, then verify each bulb from the Bulbs page in the control panel. See Bulb pairing.

  5. Upload video files: open the Uploads page in the control panel and upload the idle and active video files.

  6. Configure the installation: use the Devices, Bulbs, and Settings pages to map controllers to bulbs/LEDs, name bulbs, and adjust settings. See the control panel guide for details on each page.

  7. Start and verify: on the Server page, press Start (or Save & Restart if you changed config). Interact with each MIDI controller to confirm its bulbs light up, LED responds, and video reacts.
